Court hands down life sentences over inmate's torture, killing

Three guards gardiyan and a deputy yardımcı director müdür at the Metris Prison in İstanbul were sentenced mahkum etmek to life without the possibility of parole şartlı tahliye for causing the death of an inmate tutuklu as a result of torture işkence.

On Tuesday, the İstanbul 14th High Criminal Court mahkeme ruled Metris Prison Deputy Director Fuat Karaosmanoğlu and guards Selahattin Apaydın, Nihat Kızılkaya and Sami Ergazi to be given life sentences for the killing of Engin Çeber, who died while in state custody gözaltı. Çeber and his friends were taken into custody in İstanbul in early October 2008 for reportedly selling the leftist magazine Yürüyüş. They were later arrested and sent to Metris Prison, where they were allegedly sözde subjected to torture and the disproportionate oransız use of force by policemen and prison guards.
