begin

"begin" fiili continuous tense'lerde kullanılmıyorsa anlam farkı olmaz.

She began singing.

She began to sing.

"begin" continuous tense'lerde kullanıldığında infinitive gelir.

She is beginning to sing.

dread

Genellikle gerund'la kullanılır.

She dreaded taking the test.

"dread" bazen düşünmek fiili "think, consider" ile kullanılır aşağıdaki cümlede "dreaded to think" düşünmek istemiyordu anlamına gelir.

He dreaded to think of the consequences of his actions.

forget

Daha önce yapmış olduğu bir şeyi unutmak anlamına gelir. Aşağıdaki cümlede: "Kitabı çocukken okuduğunu unuttu."

She forgot reading the book when she was a kid.

Bir şeyi yapmayı unutmak anlamına gelir. Yani: "Bu ay kirayı yatırmayı unuttu."

She forgot to pay the rent this month.

keep

Yapılan eylemin devam ettiği anlamına gelir. "Konuşmayı sürdürdü."

She kept talking.

"için" anlamı katar. "Polisin girmesini engellemek için rehineleri tuttu."

The attackers kept hostages to prevent the police from entering.

need

Passive anlamı vardır. Yani "Evin temizlenmeye ihtiyacı var."

The house needs cleaning.

Genellikle infnitive'le kullanılır.

He needs to call his boss.

He needs him to call his boss.

regret

Genellikle gerund'la kullanılır.

I regretted being late to the interview.

Infinitive'le kullanıldığında geçmişte olmuş bir olaydan pişmanlık anlamı vermez. "Şirketteki konumunuzun kaldırıldığını bildirmekten üzgünüz." Ya da "Üzülerek bildiriyoruz ki..."

We regret to inform you that your position at the company is being eliminated.

remember

Geçmişte yapılan bir şeyi hatırlamak. "Dün, toplantıdan bahsettiğimi hatırlıyorum."

I remember mentioning the meeting yesterday.

Bir şeyi yapmayı hatırlamak. "Çıkmadan önce ışıkları söndürmeyi hatırladı (unutmadı)."

He remembered to turn off the lights before he left.

start

Continuous tense'le kullanılmadığında ikisi de gelebilir.

Marge started talking really fast.

Marge started to talk really fast.

Continuous tense'le kullanıldığında infnitive gelir.

Marge is starting to talk really fast.

Diğer bir durumda, infinitive kullanımı, başlanan işin bitmeden bırakıldığı, ya da devam etmekte olduğu anlamını verir.

I started to learn Russian, but it was so much work that I finally quit the class.

stop

Genellikle gerund'a kullanılır. "Sağlıkla ilgili sebeplerden, sigara içmeyi bıraktı."

He stopped smoking for health reasons.

Infinitive'le kullanıldığında "için" anlamı verir. "Bir kaç dakika dinlenmek için durdu."

He stopped to rest for a few minutes.

try

Farklı yollar denemiş.

She can't find a job. She tried looking in the paper, but there was nothing. She tried asking friends and family, but nobody knew of anything. She also tried going shop to shop, but nobody was hiring.

Yapmak istemediğin bir şeyi denemek.

She tried eating the snake soup, but she didn't like it.

Infinitive kullanılmışsa denemiş, ama başarısız olmuş anlamına gelir.

She tried to climb the tree, but she couldn't even get off the ground.
