Languages are influenced by the weather. Eskimos have at least 16 words for snow.
 
The nomadic Bedouins of the Sahara Desert have many ways of describing hot dry conditions. They have many words for sand.
 
In all societies people discuss the weather. And they develop the special vocabulary they need to do this.
  • It's pouring.
  • It's spotting.
  • It's drizzling.
  • It's coming down in buckets.
  • It's good weather for ducks.
 
And the very bizarre phrase:
  • It's raining cats and dogs.

  • In extreme conditions, like the snow-covered Arctic, this vocabulary becomes very specialized.
  • In Britain the preoccupation is rain. There are numerous expressions to describe it.
