"Sons and Lovers' by David Herbert Lawrence

Morels family lives near a mine. Mr. Morel is a miner and he is always drunk. Mrs. Morel hates his husband and finds relief in her children. She is keen on the eldest son, William. When he goes to London for his job, she becomes very upset.

When William becomes ill and dies after a few years later, Mrs. Morel goes mad and ignores everything in the world up to the moment she faces the danger of losing Paul, too. Afterward, she focuses on Paul and starts to intervene his life and choices.

One day, Mrs. Morel and paul visit the Leivers family and Paul likes Miriam Leivers.

They carry on a very intimate, but purely platonic, relationship for many years. Mrs. Morel does not approve of Miriam, and this may be the main reason that Paul does not marry her. He constantly wavers in his feelings toward her. Sometimes he hates Mirriam because of his mother.

Miriam introduces her friend, Clara to Paul. Paul remembers her, she is the wife of Baxter Dawers. He is impressed by Clara but still loves Miriam. However, Mrs. Morel becomes more cruel towards Miriam and at last she manages to seperate them up. Although she is ill, she still has the dominance over Paul.

After breaking off his relationship with Miriam, Paul begins to spend more time with Clara and they begin an extremely passionate affair. However, she does not want to divorce her husband Baxter, and so they can never be married.

Paul's mother falls ill and he devotes much of his time to caring for her. When she finally dies, he is broken-hearted. Paul tries to return back to Miriam but she doesn't want him anymore.
