Although their leader isadamantabout not returning to thefray, supporters of Deniz Baykal, who resigned as chairman of the Republican People's Party, or CHP, on Monday, arecooking upplans to convince him to return. Campaigns,petitionsand even ahungerstrikeareongoing.Debateslinger, however, over exactly when he should stage his comeback.
Along with hisresignationMonday, Baykal also announced he would not run as a candidate at the upcoming partyconventionon May 22-23, but the party administration has already intensified efforts to find new formulas for Baykal's possible comeback.
A group of youth from CHP's Maltepe branch, meanwhile, started Tuesday a hunger strike at Baykal's residence in a show of support. Baykalallegedlyopposed the move.
The CHP is also evaluating a possiblereferendumprocess without Baykal. The majority of party members share the view that the campaign against the reform package is likely to fail without him. They thus point to the historical responsibility that falls onto Baykal, saying he should come back. On the other hand, those who believe the campaign process may see unpleasantincidentsif the party enters the process with Baykalconstitutea smallportionof the party.
Anotherspeculationis that the ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, is likely to call for an early election if Baykal doesn't return in the upcoming convention and atemporaryparty leader is elected. The ruling party allegedly plans tobenefitfrom CHP'scurrentweak situation.
