By law,Turkishmunicipalitiesat all levels are required toensurethathouseholdand packagingwastearecollectedseparatelyand that they are then sent to theappropriatewaste-collection, waste-separation and recyclingfacilitiesof licensed firms. Moreover, municipalities are required to provideinfrastructurefor recycling other kinds of waste, such as vegetable oil, batteries, tires,constructionwaste, as well as electronic andmedicalwaste.
Municipalities, however, do not make a great enough effort toinformcitizensabout recycling programs and provide bags to helpsortthe waste, Taşdemir said, adding that he would bediligenta recycler if the authorities had given him thecapabilitiesto do so.
The Daily Newssoughtinformation about the recycling services of all 39 Istanbuldistrictmunicipalities, but after two weeks, only 21 provided information about their services and only six gave full, detailed reports.
In general, the research suggested that while some municipalities havesignificantlyprogressedin their recycling projects, others have shown little or no progress at all.
