Heavy rains expected in western Turkey until Wednesday

The heavy rains andgustingwinds that have affected northwestern Turkey since Sunday evening are expected topersistin the Marmara region until Wednesday.
Poor weather conditions also caused 77 ships and tankers to be forciblyanchorednear the Şarköy district shores of the Thracian province of Tekirdağ. Of thosevessels, 62managedto continue on their routes Monday morning. The remaining 15 are still anchored in Şarköy.
Istanbul was also caughtunpreparedfor the early-summer rains. Sunday flights to Çanakkale from Istanbul were cancelleddue tothe storms, while many homes and workplaces in the Tuzla, Pendik and Kurtköy districts on the Anatolian side of the city were flooded and some vehicles werestuckon the roads. A private shipyard was flooded at Tuzla, damaging dozens of unfinished yachts. The financial loss is estimated to be in the millions of Turkish Liras. Somegreenhousesin Pendik's Göçbeli village alsosuffereddamage from the rains.
The amount of rain per square meter that fell in some of Istanbul's districts between Sunday evening and noon on Monday totaled 56 liters for Göztepe; 37 liters for Eminönü and Kilyos; 32 liters for Kurtköy, Çavuşbaşı, Florya and Sarıyer; 24.4 liters for Çatalca, 28 liters for Büyükada Island; and 24 liters for İstinye.
Officials warned citizens about possible floods, thunderstorms andlandslides. The Governor's Office ordered public workers withdisabilitiesto take the day off Monday and schools in Istanbul were closed. Whether the schools will remain closed Tuesday and Wednesday will be decided according to weather conditions Monday night.
Temperatures are expected to increase after the rains are gone, with the Marmara region predicted to be 9 degrees hotter after Wednesday.
