More than 400 children being brought up in Turkey's jails

The five women'sjailsin Turkeyhold444 mothers,accompaniedby 479 children who are beingbrought upbehindbars, daily Radikal reported Tuesday.
JusticeMinister Sadullah Erginprovidedthe information after Sebahat Tuncel, an Istanbuldeputywith the Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP, introduced amotionabout childrenresidingin prisons with their mothers.
When such children reach the age of six, they are sent to the Social Services and Child Protection Agency, or SHÇEK, or to astateorphanage, Ergin said, adding that the women's jailsincludenurseriesfor children living in the prisons.
According to Ergin, "61 of the childrenbenefitfrom thepenalinstitution's nursery, five of them from the state orphanage's nursery and five from the Education Ministry's nurseries."
In addition, "294 of the children are between the ages of 0 and 2, 136 of them are between the ages of 3 and 4 and 49 of them are between the ages of 5 and 6," the justice minister said.
According to an April 30 count, there are 4,084 women in Turkish prisons; 3,491 of them areincarcerateddue tolegaloffenses, six because of connections to right-wingterrorist organizations, 442 because of connections to left-wing terrorist organizations and 139 due togang-related offenses.
