Wednesday, March 10, 2010
As the names of somequakevictimswere written twice on lists after the quakehitElazığ on Monday, the number of deaths was reported to be 41 althoughinitiallystated as 51.
Meanwhile, quake survivors still struggle to normalize with the help of state authorities andcivilianorganizations, as three days passed after thedisaster.
The number of deaths from the Elazığ earthquake is actually 41, not 51, according to Selçuk Aslan, thelocalgovernorof the Kovancılardistrictwhere villages were hit the hardest.
The mistake in the number of deaths resulted from the writing of some victims' namestwiceon the list, as some women were married under a religiouswedlock, causing them to be written on the lists with both theirmaidennames and husband's surnames, private news channel NTV reported. Some other victims, whosepubliclyknown names were different from the names on theirIDs, were also written twice on the lists.
Meanwhile, as time passed after Monday's quake, which hit sixvillagesin the easternprovinceof Elazığ, survivors try toresurrecttheir lives. The story of one young quake survivor came forward among others, as he was the only one who survived fromdebriswhere his mother and small brother died. Keko Çiçek, who is eight years old, was rescued from debris by his aunt, the daily Milliyet reported. He wasslightlyinjured, but at first he could not be told his mother and brother died. He learned about their deaths on Wednesday andimmediatelyran back to the debris to look for his mother although days had passed and she was already buried. Keko's father, who worksabroad, was on his way topick uphis son.
Anotherheart-breakingstory was about a baby, named Helen Yüksel, who was only 15 days old. She was sleeping with her mother and grandmother in the same bed, Doğan news agency reported. When theshakestarted, the two women closed down on the baby to protect her, which they succeeded in doing. The baby survived with no injuries, but the two women died. Burhanettin Yüksel, the father of the baby, who lost his father, mother and wife, said Helen's aunt would take care of her for now. "We were in two separate houses connected by a garden [when the quake happened]. We were 12 people. Women were staying in one house while men were in the other. A big noise was heard during the morning, and I remained under the debris. I was rescued 30 minutes later,' he said.
