Turkey ismarkingWednesday'sanniversaryof the death Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, thefounderof modern Turkey, with several ceremonies andeventthroughoutthe country.
The ceremonies began Tuesday as police officers andmainoppositionRepublican People's Party, or CHP,provincialheadsvisited Anıtkabir, Atatürk's mausoleum, in Ankara together with party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
The first ceremony in Ankara on Wednesday washeldat Anıtkabir.Stateofficialsunder the direction of President Abdullah Gül laidwreathsat Atatürk's mausoleum at 9:05 a.m., theexacthour of his death in 1938.
Aseparateceremony was held at Atatürk's room in Dolmabahçe Palace, where he died.Afterwards, flowers were laid in his room, and members of the public were allowed to visit.
Along withthe official ceremonies, several events have also been organized to mark the day, with the Association of Bikers traveling from several provinces to Ankara to visit Anıtkabir.
The Athletics Federation has also organized a race for the day during which runners from various age groups will run the 1,500 meters and the 6,000 meters in Ankara.
Atatürk will becommemoratedin Bulgaria as well, where he went toserveas a military attaché during Ottoman rule.
