US presidential system unsuitable for Turkey, experts say

Apresidentialsystemsimilarto that used in the United States would be difficult toreplicatein Turkey, alegalexpert has said followingrumorsthe government istoyingwith the idea of adopting a new system of government.
"The presidential system in the United States is a model which developed as a result of its own historic, social, political and economiccircumstances. It has no other [models] and was onlyappliedsuccessfully in the United States,' Erdoğan Teziç, aconstitutionallaw professor, told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review.
The main reason behind the difficulty is Turkey'slackof the U.S.'s social and politicalbackground.
'Model mayleadto dictatorship'
İlter Turan, professor of International Relations at Bilgi University, said political party leaders in Turkey hadexcessivepower, adding that there was lack ofsupervisionover them.
"So, the presidential system is in a way applied in Turkey,' he said. "I don't think the presidential system will meet the needs of the country, but it seems it will meet the needs of political party leaders.'
Ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP,spokesmanAhmet İyimaya told the Daily News that the presidential system was not on theiragendaas they werefocusingon post-referendumlegislativework.
However, in recentremarks, the AKP's Burhan Kuzu said Turkey's parliamentary system did notrecognizetheseparationof powersthoroughlyenough and added that the presidential system was the healthiest political model regarding theprotectionof the separation of powers.
The Daily News was unable to contact Kuzu for comment Tuesday but some believe recent discussionsindicatethe rumorsregardingPrime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan'ssupposedpresidentialambitionsmay be more thanspeculative.
